The International Mathematics Olympics began in 1959, aiming to stimulate the interest and enthusiasm of young people to learn mathematics, and provide opportunities for mutual exchanges and learning. Since 1985, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology has organized Chinese outstanding middle school students each year. A total of 218 people have been selected to participate in the competition, winning 174 gold medals, 36 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals.

The head coach Chen Kaizhen said that Zhang Zhicheng loved and interested in mathematics, dared to study, and was very hardworking.
