Only by taking life seriously can we hope to form a reasonable between the biosphere and ourselves —
Rachel Carson (1907-1964), American writer, a pioneer of modern environmental protection movement.
If there is a huge chain in the biological world, then humans must be the creature at the top of the chain, dominating everything. From knives and fire to the roar of machines, human transformation and use of biospheres are becoming more and more diverse, and their effects are becoming more and more significant. In the era of trembling forests and hiding in birds and beasts, in the era when human beings exchanged for recent interests at the cost of long -term tragedy, people were proud of "conquering nature", and environmental protection did not pay attention. However, today people should think that while getting a property from nature, there must be a debt of equivalent value to be repaid, and this creditor is the nature. The people of aspiring began to shout for the increasingly damaged biological circle. The typical representative was American journalist Rachel Carson and his work "Silent Spring".
What did you say "Silent Spring"
If you are interested in looking at newspapers or media in the 1960s, you will be surprised to find that the word "environmental protection" can hardly find. In 1962, the "Silent Spring" of Rachel Carson (1907-1964) was published. When scientists firmly believed that humans were firmly controlled nature, Carson believed that nature balance was human survival. The main force, the harmonious development of the biosphere is the basis for human survival.
In 1952, Carson conducted research and research on the east coast of the United States with Bob Hines (1912-1994). Haynes has worked at the American Fish and Wildlife Bureau (USFWS). He has been committed to the research and protection of wild animals in his life. He is Carson's powerful assistant and once provided illustrations for his works.
The beginning of the book tells such a story: there is a small town in the United States, crops are spread, orchards are forests, animal knots are groups, birds are happy, and they are happy and peaceful. One day, people began to develop and build a house in this town, and everything began to change quietly: inexplicable diseases attacked the town, the birds were extinct, the plants were scorched, and the strange silence shrouded this place. People can no longer hear the birds. Call, accompanied by the silent spring is the shadow of death. What exactly is the sound of spring in the town?
Carson tried to give the answer through this book: "The chemicals that have not been selected have the power to kill each insect. They make the bird's singing and fish rolling in the river ..... ".". For example, the toxic pesticide DDT mentioned in the book, while killing the pests, has caused huge damage to all creatures including humans, which greatly increases the chance of cancer.
It is gratifying that the year of the book was published, the legislature of each state proposed more than 40 proposals to restrict pesticides. Ten years later, DDT was completely banned from use. "Silent Spring" has set off a global environmental protection movement with its huge power.
On May 27, 2007, the place of Carson was born, and the town of Springle, Pennsylvania. The local people spontaneously held a rally to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Carson. Carson's great contribution to human environmental protection is still nostalgic and respected by people.
The rise of environmental protection movement
It is a pity that in 1964, two years after the "Silent Spring" was published, Carson became ill and died. However, through this unusual book, she issued the first alarm for human beings to destroy the biosphere in modern technology, which caused people to pay attention to pesticide abuse and the harmonious development of biospheres around the world, which evoked people's awareness of environmental protection. Carson was also selected by Life Magazine in 1990 as one of the 100 most important Americans in the twentieth century.
Since then, environmental protection has begun to become a hot topic of public discussion, and governments of various countries have also begun to take action: On June 16, 1972, the "Declaration of the UN Human Environment Conference" passed in Stockholm, and the seven points of common views passed by the declaration and 26 items passed by the declaration. In principle, it has become the consensus and guidance of the people of all countries to protect the ecological environment.
Former US Vice President Algore believes that the book is the starting point of the contemporary environmental protection movement: "She brought us back to a basic idea. This concept has been lost in modern civilization. This concept is: Human beings and nature get along with nature. " This book is like a shout in the wilderness, changing the historical process with deep perception and argument argument, and has a profound impact worldwide
