The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on September 6 that a proposal has been submitted to provide funds for the Solomon Islands election. The Solomon Islands government said in a statement: "This is an attack on our parliamentary democratic system, and a direct interference in our domestic affairs."

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Sogovre has submitted a constitutional amendment to the parliament to extend the term of the parliament to November 2023. Sogovre believes that the Solomon Islands are unable to host two major activities of the Pacific Games and parliamentary elections at the same time in the same year. The Solomon Islands will hold a general election every 4 years, and the current term of the parliament will expire in May 2023.
