This illustration comes from "Black Princess and other Brazil fairy tales" published in London in 1916, depicting the story of "Mermaid's Pearl".

The mermaid fell in love with a young and handsome fisherman who often observed him while he was fishing. But the fisherman couldn't see her at all during the day. On one occasion, the fisherman went to fishing in the middle of the night and encountered a storm. The boat turned over. The fisherman sank into the bottom and was rescued by the mermaid. This scene depicts the illustration.

The mermaid brought him to his castle, and made him forget his identity with magic, and lived happily in this best castle. The fisherman's mother was very sad because she couldn't find her son. Under the guidance of the fairy, she awakened her son with tears.

The fisherman who returned to the world gradually forgot the mermaid and fell in love with a beautiful girl, but he had no money to buy gifts for the beautiful girl. Sad he came to the beach and made a wish to the sea. His wish was heard by the mermaid. The next day, when he came to the beach, he found a series of pearl necklaces, where the mermaid put his necklace there. The fisherman took this string of necklaces and gave him a happy person, and since then they lived happily together. The mermaid was forgotten forever.
