This is a map published in 1574. It depicts the layout of the Cambridge area in the UK. It is the earliest existing Cambridge map printing. There are currently only two copies of the world. The production of this map uses copper plate printing, which shows the 16th century Cambridge Town with bright and rich color and extremely accurate drawing methods.
The painter of this map is called Richard Lynch. He is the first known British known on the copper plate. At the top right of the map, Lynch described the Town of Cambridge in detail in Latin, which specifically mentioned the drainage canal in the town.
In the medieval Europe, sewage discharge has always been a difficult problem. People pour the sewage on the street. It is okay in winter. In summer, these sewage will emit unpleasant stench. In order to improve the environment in the town, Cambridge people built a drainage canal called "Wanggou". This drainage canal connects to a nearby river, which can easily discharge the sewage into the river. Since then, Cambridge Town has resumed beautiful and pleasant appearance.
