The opening of the World Chinese Mathematical Conference: Yang Le, Ding Jian and others won awards!

"Over the past 40 years, the development of Chinese mathematics has entered a platform. We have kept up with the international level. It is like climbing the Himalayas of the highest mountain in the world to a platform. The road may be short in the future, but it will also be the most difficult road." On July 31, at the opening ceremony of the Ninth World Chinese Mathematician Conference (ICCM) held in Nanjing, Qiu Chengtong, a professor of lecturer at Tsinghua University and director of the Qiu Chengtong Mathematics Center of Tsinghua University, encouraged young mathematicians.

In 1998, the World Chinese Mathematical Conference was initiated by Qiu Chengtong and held every three years. The meeting was co -sponsored by Southeast University, Tsinghua University and Nanjing Kirin Technology Innovation Park for 6 days.

The conference awarded the ICCM Mathematics Award (formerly morning Xing Mathematics Award) for young mathematicians who made outstanding contributions and promoting the development of mathematics. The award target is under 45 years old.

Ding Jian, a professor at the School of Mathematics Sciences at Peking University, won the ICCM Mathematics Award.

In January of this year, Ding Jian left the University of Pennsylvania and returned to work with a full time. Earlier, Ding Jian returned to China to study, and felt their common wish in exchanges with many domestic mathematicians -I hope that more original work will work in China. This is also one of the important reasons for Ding Jian to return to China.

This year, the Chinese Mathematical Conference set up the "Mathematics Contribution Award" for the first time. The award was awarded the leading mathematicians who have achieved outstanding and highly popular achievements in the field of mathematics and science to recognize their life -long contributions to the peak of Chinese mathematics. Yang Le, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In addition, five people including Miao Shuang and Tsinghua University Wu Hao won the ICCM Silver Award. Wang Jinlong, a professor at Taiwan University, and Mo Yiming, a professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Hong Kong, won the Chen Self -Sports Award, and Leon Simon, a professor at the Department of Mathematics of Stanford University in the United States, won the John Cotton International Cooperation Award. In order to encourage undergraduate students from both sides of the Taiwan Straits and Hong Kong universities to carry out creative research work, this conference also added ICCM Creative Undergraduate Paper Awards.

"The cultivation of Chinese high school students and undergraduates has reached the world's advanced level. We must help them grow up, push the roots of mathematical research in China, and become the leader of the field of Chinese mathematics research in the future." At the conference, Qiu Chengtong said.

In Qiu Chengtong's view, there is still a certain gap between the level of graduate students in my country and the world level. In the future, the development of mathematics in my country will rely on graduate students. "The performance of graduate students is the most important job in our next 10 years."
