"China Science News": At the graduation ceremony of my alma mater this year, Teacher Ye said, "I have experienced many setbacks since I graduated from college, but I still have not given up. I firmly believe that failure can make me more mature. Know how to succeed. "Please talk about the biggest setbacks you have encountered? How do you overcome and get maturity?

Ye Lupeng:

The biggest setback should be the college entrance examination. When I was in high school, I always prefer sports. I usually participate in track and field training and plan to take physical schools or police academy. Near the physical examination, my body had some situations, and the results were not available. This made me very frustrated, so I just filled out the college entrance examination. When I knew that I was accepted by Zhejiang Wanli College, I also called the school and wanted them to retreat and reject it, but it was too late and I could only go to college.

In the early years of college, I was more confused. I didn't spend my thoughts on learning. The first score for the first test of English was very low.

At that time, Hong Lingjuan was our major, so I went to her to ask her learning method. Later, I communicated too much and received some infection. I started to think about my status quo and felt that I couldn't delay it so much. At least I had to learn some professional knowledge and take the four levels. Later, I spent a lot of hard work to study, but because of the weak foundation, I passed it several times before I passed the test.

There were a lot of students who came to ask me at the time. I can feel that most people should use notes to deal with the exam, and only Ye Lupeng really wants to improve himself. He is the kind of person who has the perseverance and persistence. From the beginning of the junior, he will buy breakfast on time every day to wait for me downstairs. We are the first batch of people waiting for the library every day. Sometimes he became he urged me to learn.

"China Science News": From Zhejiang Wanli College to Zhejiang University, to Yale, this is a counterattack in people's eyes. What do you think of this process by yourself?

Hong Lingjuan:

Looking back, it is relatively more difficult from Wanli College to Zhejiang University. We are rare students who are admitted to Zhejiang University in the history of the school.

We are all locals in Zhejiang, and Zhejiang University is the best school that everyone is recognized. At that time, I wanted to go all out and let go.

During the postgraduate entrance examination, we often encourage each other and remind each other, similar to "I am close to Zhejiang University today! We have a toe that has already stepped into Zhejiang University!" This kind of study is not boring every day. I feel that it is getting closer to the target.

Ye Lupeng:

We will not taboo our alma mater. The second book is just a stage, a temporary state, and it cannot determine our life. Moreover, learning resources or support conditions are not less than other schools.

At that time, there were a lot of students who were preparing to take the postgraduate entrance examination, but there were very few people who could really persist from morning to night to the end. We feel that if you want to do one thing with your heart, you will try everything to achieve it, and you will not feel so difficult after doing it.

Once a person persists in one thing, it will be easier to complete the second thing when you taste the joy of success. So the experience of the postgraduate entrance examination gives a lot of power behind.

"China Science News": When did you strengthen the idea of ​​doing scientific research?

Ye Lupeng:

It should be a period of doctoral after graduation.

I have been doing insect -related studies in the early stage of the PhD, and I will use early gene editing and genetic operation tools such as TALEN, homologous reorganization, and transposition. In 2013, CRISPR-CAS9 gene editing technology has emerged. I am very interested. At that time, the boss also encouraged me to do some exploration.

When I graduated from Dr., I hope to do more accumulation in this regard. After I have done a blog of Hong Lingjuan's boss, Professor Han Feng, I am very grateful to the teacher. This should be said to be a turning point in my life. For more than this year, it can be said that I have completely liberated myself and made a lot of exploration on the most interesting things. In this process, I hope to treat scientific research as a career.

"China Science News": Is it smooth after applying for Yalebo? What difficulties did I encounter in the early days of the laboratory? Ye Lupeng:

At that time, I wanted to go to the forefront of technology and research abroad, screening a lot of laboratories, and voted resumes for those top laboratories, but did not pass.

Later, on the official website of Yale University, I saw that my boss's name was very familiar. When I remembered his dissertation, he was still doing a blog at Zhang Feng's laboratory at that time. I immediately wrote him an email and later passed the interview. Then I helped Teacher Hong also voted for the resume. It was Yale's cardiovascular center. Generally, we felt very lucky.

I did encounter some problems when I first went. In the first seven months, I basically did research with other members as partners. My research method was still confused and there was no progress. During that time, the whole person was more anxious.

Later, I slowly realized that looking for the most suitable research direction or topic of myself, it was more inspired by the literature. From the latest research results, grasping the current cutting -edge scientific issues, how to solve these scientific problems has become me. Carry out the entry point of research. Pay attention to the research and development and scientific issues in the field, evaluate your interests and abilities, and find the combination of research with laboratory research. Return to China: Choose a college that is not the only number and influence factor, focusing on the real important issue

"China Science News": The two mentioned that they would not hesitate to choose to return to work. What kind of consideration is this?

Hong Lingjuan:

Our original plan was to return to China. During the post -doctoral period, what the boss did not do what the boss had the main decision right, of course, the results were from foreign laboratories. Sometimes, when our opinions are on the left, the results of negotiations and consultations are not necessarily satisfactory. After returning, there may be more opportunities to do what we want to do, and the results are also China.

"China Science News": Why do you choose Nanjing University? What are the plans in the future?

Ye Lupeng:

At that time, several schools were interviewed, and Nanjing University was the most suitable for you.

NTU was my first school, and after the interview, I received an offer notice from the Modern Biological Research Institute.

First of all, the Modern Biological Research Institute is a newly established college. Its scientific research concepts, student training mechanisms, professor introduction and promotion mechanisms are closer to developed countries. It has a very good scholarship research environment. The college does not care how many articles and influence factors have published, and the research on the importance, integrity, and sustainability of the research in the field. In this way, I can focus more on truly important scientific issues.

In addition, the Modern Biological Research Institute provides young professors with sufficient start -up funds and laboratory space.

Hong Lingjuan:

Some of my studies are still being promoted. At present, only one article is issued, and the school has given researchers' positions.

Due to the epidemic, it is difficult to transport experimental animals. After returning, they are preparing these. It takes a few months to continue research. After two or three years, with the accumulation of results, I may look for more competitive positions.

"China Science News": From blog to independent PI, what do you think of this? What are the differences from scientific research before?

Ye Lupeng:

After doing blogs, you can put all your energy on research. Doing experiments is the focus. But becoming an independent PI, the request will be more:

First of all, to ensure that the laboratory has sufficient funds, this responsibility is fully responsible for PI. At the end of the second year after Yale, the laboratory faced funding problems. The laboratory funds were almost used up. Most of the work had to be suspended.

Second, we must not only know how to do scientific research, but also know who cooperates with and arrange for who to do it to ensure the successful completion of a project. The background of everyone in the team is different. How to give play to their biggest advantages is a question that needs to be seriously considered;

Third, a laboratory will have a unique ecological environment. It takes time to consider how to operate and maintain and build a cultural atmosphere.

There are still great differences in front and back, and I am also adapting.

"China Science News": In recent years, many "green peppers" mentioned that the career pressure faced is increasing, such as publishing articles, title assessment, fierce competition, etc., will you have such pressure?

Ye Lupeng:

There must be stress, but because the school's promotion method, etc., will be relatively better.

The title given to me by Nanjing University is an assistant professor and a special researcher. At the same time, it is a doctoral supervisor, and there are many indicators for enrollment. In September, many master students will join the laboratory, and 2 doctoral students will join next year, which is very exciting.

This is very important. According to the traditional promotion standards, it is difficult to be a doctoral supervisor when it is not a professor. At the youth stage, when everyone's thinking is the most energetic, it is a pity not to do experiments without doctoral students under their hands. When the professor is promoted, it is likely that the age is relatively old, and the thinking and energy cannot be compared with before.

At the same time, due to non -quantitative and relatively loose assessment methods, I can have time to do a real interested study.

From the time and energy in scientific research in these years, Teacher Ye is more than me. Especially after having a child, it is difficult for me to do scientific research as before. Therefore, his growth is faster than me. But my interest has always been there. When Teacher Ye has established an independent laboratory. After having platform resources, I also have a backing. "China Science News": In 2019, the third year of going abroad, the birth of the son, what changes have brought to your work and life?

Hong Lingjuan:

It is okay when I am pregnant. The time and energy in the scientific research can still be guaranteed, but after the son was born, he completely disrupted his work and life.

At the time of maternity leave, I started to rest 2 weeks in advance. I didn't wait until the full moon and went to the laboratory. I helped my mother to bring it during the day. However, due to breastfeeding, every three or four hours either go home or go to the mother and infant room to suck milk to freeze. This has caused many big experiments to do it, and it is always interrupted in the process. It takes more time than the original.

Due to the lack of consciousness, the level of hormones, and facing an unprecedented situation, during that time, the state of my whole person was very bad, and often the anxiety collapsed. Like we do experiments, we will raise the cells and die, and we will change a batch. But in the face of my own children, I can't bear any problem. There is no good solution. Only by constantly adjusting and adaptation, Mr. Ye also suffered a lot during that time.

"China Science News": Teacher Ye mentioned that when we have to bring children during the day, I can only use work in the laboratory at night. How long does this situation last?

Ye Lupeng:

In 2020, the child was about 1 year old. We couldn't breathe, but the epidemic came. Torto is closed, and domestic parents can't live, so at least one person we must stay at home with children.

In the morning, Teacher Hong went to work in the laboratory, and I brought children at home. In the afternoon or dinner, the child is more dependent on my mother at night. I generally use this time to work in the laboratory and go back in the middle of the night. This lasts for more than half a year. The U.S. epidemic has always been serious. Later, he had to resume work. The child returned to the childcare. The pressure of parenting reduced a lot, but even more scared, because children were likely to be infected.

"China Science News": How do you take care of your career and family? How is housework allocated?

Ye Lupeng:

I actually decided to go to Nanjing University in July last year, but the results of Teacher Hong had not been published at that time, because there were a lot of delay in having children and epidemic. If they returned to China at that time, the research meeting was greatly reduced. So I decided to go forward. This year, her first result came out before we set off back to China.

If she continues to stay in Yale, the subsequent research will be more smooth, but considering the hope that the family is together, she will also come to Nanjing.

Another example is to adjust and adapt to each other.

Hong Lingjuan:

Household chores are their respective advantages. Teacher Ye is very good at cooking. He basically captures the food of the whole family, and there are some rough work. I will be responsible for other housework. Of course, he will also take the initiative to share it.

"China Science News": Which is easier to cook and do scientific research?

Ye Lupeng:

I have always felt that if I can cook, the experiments can definitely be done. But the experiments do not have to make good meals. Many things are quantitative and fixed, but the cooking, seasoning, and order of cooking are all sensible. There are similarities, but there is a big difference. (laugh)
