The Sichuan Provincial Higher People's Court sentenced Zhang Zhijun to the death penalty on October 28, 2020, and implemented two years of slow periods to deprive political rights for life. After the verdict came into effect, the six close relatives of the victims appealed. The Sichuan Provincial Higher People's Court decided to start retrial, and formed a collegial panel to hear the case in accordance with the law. On December 31, 2021, Zhang Zhijun was sentenced to death, deprived of political rights for life, and reported to the Supreme People's Court for approval in accordance with the law.

The Supreme People's Court reviewed that the defendant Zhang Zhijun, the defendant of the original trial, had a sharp knife stabbing his son -in -law Zou Mou and Zou Moufen and Yang Moufen with a sharp knife.
