In September 2020, criminal suspects Hong Yan, Zhang Chenguang, and Cao Zeqing were approved to be arrested. It is reported that the defendant Hong Yan and the victim Li Moon were in love with the lover. The latter two contradicted that Hong Yan had the intention of killing Li Yueyue and invited the defendants Zhang Chenguang and Cao Zeqing to discuss the plan to kill Li Moyue many times.

On the morning of July 7, 2022, the "Nanjing Female College Student Criminal Case" ushered in the first trial judgment in the Xishuangbanna Intermediate People's Court: the defendant Hong Yan was sentenced to death for intentional homicide and deprived of political rights for life. Cao Zeqing was sentenced to death for intentional homicide and executed for two years, depriving political rights for life. The court's judgment mentioned that during the intentional killing of the joint crime, Hong Yan was a prisoner, planner, and commander. The three defendants were the main criminals.
