FIFA: Qatar World Cup will enable semi -automatic offside recognition technology

FIFA announced on the 1st that the Qatar World Cup will be opened in the 2022 Qatar World Cup in November this year to help the referee and video assistant referee (VAR) faster and more accurate.
According to reports, the SAOT system is mainly composed of three parts: special camera, intra -ball sensor and artificial intelligence system. During the World Cup, 12 special cameras will be set on the top of each stadium to track the football and each player on the field and send data at a frequency of 50 times per second to accurately determine the position of each player. The Qatar World Cup designated ball "Al Rihla" to send data at a frequency of 500 times per second to use it to determine the passing point more accurately. The data information collected by the special camera and the sensor in the ball will be analyzed by the artificial intelligence system. It can make a judgment of offside in just a few seconds.
Once the offside occurs, the SaOT system will automatically issue an alert to the video assistant referee to help VAR to judge, and then the VAR will communicate with the referee on the field as depending on the situation. After the referee's penalty is completed, SAOT will generate 3D animation images, which will be played on the large screen and TV on the field to show the player's offside specific position more intuitively.
According to FIFA Football Technology and Innovation Supervisor Hitzimeller, the SAOT system has been tested in the 2021 Arabia Cup, 2021 World Cup and other events, and has achieved significant results. With the support of this technology, VAR is used to check the average of offside from 70 seconds to 25 seconds. 3D animation images can provide the optimal angle to watching fans to understand the off -the -spot penalties, thereby bringing a better viewing experience.
"The 2018 Russia World Cup International Football Union introduced VAR, which greatly reduced the probability of major misjudgment. We are very confident that the semi -automatic offside identification technology can go further at the Qatar World Cup and help the referee make the most correct and best penalties on the court." Corina, chairman of the FIFA Magistrate Committee, said in an interview with a video.
The famous Italian referee also emphasized that the technology cannot determine all the complex offside conditions, and there are still certain restrictions on the use scenario. "I know that someone will exaggerate that this is a 'robotal referee', but it is not the case. The referee and assistant referee on the court are responsible for the final penalty. All scientific and technological methods are to assist the referee."
