Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, July 8th. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot during a speech at Nara City on the morning of the 8th and was taken to the hospital for rescue. The local fire department said that Abe fell to the ground and stopped the heart and lungs.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 am on the 8th (10:30 Beijing time). Abe delivered a lecture on the streets near a subway station in Nara City to pull votes for the Senate's election of the Free Democratic Party candidate. There were about 30 people on the scene. Kyodo News reported that an unknown man fired from behind Abe and fell to the ground in Abe.
When Abe was attacked, a reporter from the common club interviewed at the scene heard two sounds of suspected guns. Japanese media reported that the suspect fired about three meters behind Abe. The screen played by local Japanese TV stations showed that on the white shirt worn by Abe, there was blood stains in the left chest.
Nara Fire Bureau said Abe lost consciousness, had no breathing heartbeat, and was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment by a helicopter.
The suspect was subdued on the spot. According to Japanese media reports, the suspect was a man, in his 40s, and was arrested for suspicion of attempted killing. A shotgun was found suspected to be used for murder.
Abe is 67 years old. He served as the Prime Minister of Japan for the first time from 2006 to 2007. He came to power again in 2012. He resigned in 2020. He is the longest consecutive prime minister in Japan since the end of World War II.
