[Global Times Comprehensive Report] In recent years, scientists have used satellite images, with the help of 330,000 volunteers, and measured the population of the Antarctica Weidel Seal.
According to the British "Guardian" reported on the 19th, the Willder seal is a key species that measures the status of the Nanda Ocean Ice and the changes in the food chain. They can survive for 30 years under the harsh natural conditions of Antarctica. In the past, scientists through traditional measurement methods, that is, investigating on board or air, it is difficult to accurately grasp the number of them, and the cost is high. Since 2016, Michel Lalu, an associate professor at the University of Kanterbury University in New Zealand, creatively adopted high -resolution satellite images, plus the participation of 330,000 scientific enthusiasts, and successfully obtained the accurate data of the Wedel Seal.
The report shows that there are about 200,000 adults and adult females in Antarctica, but satellite images fail to capture more male seals because they usually hide under the ice and guard their territory. The volunteer's job is to identify whether there are seals in a satellite image area. Scientists summarize the reports submitted by them and then use algorithms to determine the status of the seal habitat.
