With the drought sweeping the Netherlands, the tap water company and the government are investigating whether they can charge higher water fees to consumers and companies who can use water. They hope to increase people's understanding of water resources and promote the use of water resources more cautiously in Dutch residents and enterprises.
Take Belgium as an example. Consumers pay the basic price for the basic water amount used by ordinary families. For water, they pay "luxury prices" twice the basic price. In this way, the tap water is still affordable as the basic necessity, but excessive use (such as filling the swimming pool or pouring garden) will be charged for additional costs.
Madelon Vink from the Dutch Water Company Association de Vewin said: "Different water costs, more information and water -saving technologies can promote more economical and environmentally friendly water, and also improve consumer water -saving awareness."
De Vewin emphasizes that tap water companies can currently assume supply obligations. "But we expect that we will face huge challenges a few years later," Vink said. "In order to provide sufficient water in the future, we do need to transform. Business, government, consumers and water companies must make changes."
On behalf of the 17 of the 21 Water Committee of the Netherlands, Hans Middendorp, the vice chairman of the General Water Board Party of the Netherlands, also likes Belgian tap water charging model. He said that every Dutch, regardless of the rich and the poor, must be able to use tap water unlimited. But each Dutch should be able to fill the swimming pool in every summer, water the garden, or wash the car?
MidDendorp said the price system of Belgium is effective. "Belgian residents consume 89 liters of tap water per day. The average daily water consumption of Dutch water is about 125 liters per person." He added.
The business community must also make contributions. The water tax in the Netherlands pays 35 cents per cubic meter of water, but the annual tax payment limit is 300 cubic meters, and the part of more than 300 cubic meters does not need to pay taxes. "This is strange," MiddleDendorp said, "A family pays 50 euros of water tax per year, but a large company only needs 100 euros each year."
The infrastructure and Water Free Management Department commissioned the BERENSCHOT agency to study the water price system. The first round of results are expected to be obtained in mid -September. The taxation measures for industrial water will be a follow -up study.
