Is the United States or the destination of Chinese students dreaming abroad? According to the "Wall Street Journal" reported on the 11th, in the first half of 2022, the number of students issued by the United States to Chinese citizens fell by more than 50%compared to the epidemic. As the number of Chinese students going to the United States has declined year after year, American universities have found that they will have to accept a "new reality" -A American universities are not so popular in the eyes of Chinese students.
"New reality"
In fact, since the epidemic, the trend of "reducing fever" in the United States has been continuing.
According to data released by the American International Education Society, the number of students in mainland China in the 2020 to 2021 academic year was 317,000, a decrease of 14.8%compared with the previous school year, and the first decline in nearly 20 years.
In 2021, the number of Chinese students' application is still declining. According to Fortune Magazine, US universities applying platform Commonapp data shows that compared with the previous year, the number of applications for Chinese students from 2021 to 2022 still decreased by 18%. As the overall application volume of international students increased by 9%, this decline seemed particularly obvious.
In the first two years of the epidemic, American universities also said that they felt "not panic" and believed that the decline in the application volume was only temporary. Once the epidemic fell, the number of Chinese students would rebound quickly.
But now, the US education industry has to admit that due to the sudden decline in Chinese students, the major and small colleges and universities in the United States, including a group of best state universities, are under pressure to undergo revenue.
Why "fever" for studying in the United States?
Why are Chinese students' interest in the United States "reducing fever"?
First of all, the epidemic has made Chinese students studying abroad.
On the one hand, strict prevention and control policies have increased the time and economic costs of students' abroad. On the other hand, during the epidemic situation, the number of new crown cases and deaths in the United States remained high, and the violence of firearms and racism emerged. The tension between China and the United States intensified, all of which have been discouraged by Chinese students to the United States.
Secondly, the U.S. visa restrictions on Chinese students have also made Chinese students feel uncomfortable with the United States.
In May 2020, Trump signed an administrative document to prohibit Chinese students studying in American universities in American universities. Some university managers said that even if some students were not related to the military, they were still refused.
Although the Biden government has resumed visa processing for Chinese students in May 2021 and publicly expressed its welcome to Chinese students, it has not revoked Trump's presidential order.
In addition, studying in the United States is not so "eating". In recent years, more and more Chinese students are setting their attention to Britain, Singapore and other places.
