A study by researchers at the Federal University of Virginia recently published in the Social Neuroscience that there may be corresponding physiological and psychological mechanisms that make it easier for us to attack other groups.

Researchers asked 35 male college students to participate in a radical and competitive task: when you see a prompt on the screen, press the button faster than anyone else. In this task, participants need to compete repeatedly with their opponents. Their opponents may be students from the same school or students from competitors.

If the participants fail in the game, they will be punished and receive a disgusting noise through the headset. But in fact, the participants are fighting against computer programs, and no real people are hurt.

Researchers have found that participants have shown different aggressiveness to students and students of competitors. Members (competitors) in the harm group have stimulated the reward circuit of the participants and are related to the experience of positive emotions. This strengthening mechanism may help explain why humans seem to be so prone to conflicts between groups.
