In the 1930s, Zhang Daqian guest lived in Peiping, that is, there were many exchanges with Qi Baishi. The two launching and led the exhibition held in Peiping many times. Zhang Daqian melted the ancient and modern painting method into a furnace, drawing on and carried forward the ink splashing method in the tradition of Chinese painting, and created a freehand landscape painting, which was compared with the abstract expressionism of the Western popular at that time. Qi Baishi opened up a highly summarized freehand painting method between the natural fun and unreasonable flowers and birds. Its brush and ink coincide with minimalism, and also echoed the direction of modern painting.
