Associate Professor He Hong of the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts has been buried in the Gansu Grottoes literature for more than 20 years. His instructor Mr. Shi Yan had measured the large and small grottoes in Hexi and Longyou, leaving a lot of precious information.

He Hong took the old photo taken by the instructor Shi Yan during the 1950s when he inspected the Caseshan Grottoes and came to Wuweai to verify it.

"Big Buddha" freshman

In 1998, Li Yunhe had reached the age of retirement. This year, the Repair Project of the Echi Mountain Grottoes was launched. He was returned by the Dunhuang Research Institute to host the repair project.

At that time, Li Bo, who had been following him as a statue repair, had become the technical backbone of the Dunhuang Research Institute.

But there are only a few black and white photos of the 1950s in their hands, and they are not very clear vision. Repair the three -dimensional Buddha with flat photos, especially the large Buddha head that is no longer existing, is even more difficult.

The father and son tried to enlarge the old photos with only stamps to the limit, and then determined the actual size of the residual part of the big Buddha's avatar, which successfully cracked the three -dimensional imaging problem of the head of the Buddha. They strictly started the repair of the Buddha in strict accordance with the ancient materials and process.
