The road of domestic chips requires the break of RISC-V?Don't be too optimistic now

We set the goal of achieving 70%of the chip independence in 2025, and worked hard to develop technology for this to increase production capacity. However, the western blockade is getting wider and higher and stronger, which has made great difficulties in achieving our goals.

Judging from the current trend, it is difficult for this goal to be achieved by 2025. The good side is that we have cultivated enough determination to achieve chip autonomy. More and more talents and funds flow into the chip industry, a good ecology is gradually growing.

RISC-V, the key to breaking the chip autonomy

The chip autonomy is not only a single manufacturing autonomy, but the improvement and autonomy of the entire industry chain. This requires us to be autonomous at various stages. Because Huawei is broken, we will easily put our attention in the field of foundry and worry about EUV lithography machines. But the United States disables EDA software. After disconnecting more technologies and equipment, we will find that in fact we are still much worse in the semiconductor field.

For example, the chip "architecture" occupying an important position. As the beginning of the chip industry, developers are designed on the basis of the chip architecture with EDA software, so that various chips will appear. It can be said that the chip architecture is at the bottom of the chip industry. If it is not autonomous, the chip industry cannot be autonomous.

At present, the mainstream chip architecture on the market is X86 and ARM architecture. The former is not open source. We have no chance to borrow X86 autonomy; although the latter has been open source, it has been updated many times, and it is difficult for us to bypass various patents. It's like a land. We wanted to build a building, and found that others had already built a high -rise building on it.

But Risc-V is different. It is not only open source open space, but also the West has not built high-rise buildings on it. We have the opportunity to build a Tongtian Tower on it.

In this regard, Academician Ni Guangnan also publicly stated: At present, the mainstream CPU market is still monopolized by the X86 and ARM architecture, but the emerging open source instruction set RISC-V will provide new opportunities for the development of my country's chip industry. CPU core technology has the initiative.

Good news keeps

As RISC-V landed in China and gradually grows, we rely on the RISC-V architecture to create our own ecology, which is completely the opportunity to achieve autonomy based on institutions. As early as 2018, we began to deploy the RISC-V architecture and committed to R & D products and industrialization. In the same year, a person with aspiring, including Academician Ni Guangnan, formed the RISC-V Alliance.

At present, more than 80 % of the directors of the official authoritative organization RISC-V Foundation are domestic companies, including Ali, Huawei, SMIC, and so on. We have mastered the right to speak in the industry.

The investment of funds and human resources is in exchange for the continuous results. On August 24th, Ali disclosed its own RISC-V chip design platform "Swordless 600" to pave the foundation for ecological construction and improve its performance to the commercial level. Last year, Huawei released the HD TV chip released by Huawei. It is a CPU based on the RISC-V architecture.

More and more companies are involved in the construction of the RISC-V ecology, and even the X86 Intel is no exception, and the potential is evident.

Don't be too optimistic at this time

Although we have an advantage now, don't be too optimistic. The RISC-V really wants to grow up and help us to achieve autonomy. There is still a long way to go, ecological growth, patent threshold, and higher-level commercialization.
